WordPress Private Post Bug?
With one of two bugs I’ve been facing with WordPress 2+ so far solved, my worries have been cut in half (lol…). But even this lone bug irritates me enough to merit a post of its own.
What happens is that when I try editing a post, and press the “Save and Continue Editing” button, the Post Status of that particular post defaults to Private (instead of Published). So, after saving the post again, my published post gets demoted to a Private post - which, as you know, disappears from the public domain.
If you’re a regular subscriber to this blog’s feed, you may have noticed this. But even if you have not, I can tell you that this bug has caused many, many posts to be stuck in no-man’s land - only to be published again the next day when I notice the problem.
Please, oh please. Can anyone help? The WP support forum seems to have a thread on this (including the suggestion that this could be a Firefox problem), but I’ve not been able to find a solution on either forum. Or is it just me (yet again…)?

I have observed the same problem many times. But this occurs only with very long posts for me. I usually check such posts in IE to see all is well after the save. (Firefox caches the old copy and usually shows all is well, when actually the post is private and 404)

Yeah, same here. It’s only long posts, but it’s exactly those long posts that I’ve spent so much time on that I want to see published to my readers straight away.
The IE is a good idea, but I usually check “Manage Posts” some time after posting to check whether any posts were set to Private intead.

but how do you remove the “private” designation?

In your Write Post interface, there’s a tab named Post Status. You can remove the private designation there.

[…] RSS subscribers might have noticed my latest post disappear earlier today after appearing in your feed readers. It was the usual “private post” problem, which I managed to rectify thanks to all of you who contacted me about it. […]

[…] Update: Apologies that todays post appeared and then disappeared. There seems to be some sort of bug in the latest Wordpress that makes a post automatically and suddenly mark itself ‘private’ for no reason at all a while after it is written. This has happened a couple of times now since I upgraded and never before then. I’ll look into it. … 5 minutes later… It seems that I am not alone. […]

[…] A funnier2 problem emerged while I was working on editing the post though. For some reason when I edited it after it had been published it was marked as private without my knowledge. A quick Google turned up these posts here and here, along with this thread, about how this is a bug, apparently occurring when editing published posts using Firefox. It didn’t seem to happen to me when I was using Safari3 so this is probably the case. However I’m starting to wonder if this isn’t so much a bug as an undocumented feature4. […]
