What is “Using WordPress as CMS”?
By virtue of the fact that WordPress (WP) makes it easy for us to write, publish, edit and organise our blogs, it’s already a content management system (CMS). So, what in the world does “Use WP as a CMS” mean when we already are?
Generally, it means to use WordPress as a more conventional CMS, for less blog-ish content and presentation style. We’re looking at portfolio sites, news and magazine sites, article libraries, gallery sites, photologs, e-commerce sites, and many more. Thus, it means to push WP beyond what it was originally intended to do - publishing blogs - and into the realm of more robust and perhaps more complex CMSes, like Drupal and XOOPS, or into the realm of CMSes specialised in other fields, like Vivvo (for news and article sites) and WSN Gallery (for media galleries).
But speaking generally sucks, so here’s some specifics on the many ways to use WP as a CMS (plus some examples too):
- Using WP for a Portfolio Site
To use WP to handle an online portfolio, it will have to be modified to make posts in WP hold individual projects (e.g. web designs, photography, art, etc.) you’ve worked on. This means that instead of the main page listing your daily ramblings in reverse chronological order, it should be able to list your projects in that order - but perhaps only with a thumbnail. Perhaps even custom fields will have to be utilised to make project administration more standardised. A couple of examples of using WP to do so are eric-powell.com and FreeWay Design. - Using WP for an E-Commerce Site
For e-commerce sites, not only will you have to make product pages that list thumbnails of your products, you would also have to integrate a payment solution (e.g. PayPal) into WordPress. Allowing your customers to dynamically change the ordering of your products in those pages, whether according to recency, price or rating, may also be necessary. A couple of examples of using WP for ecommerce are Filipino Artisans, Above The Fold, and Bell Vance Art. - Using WP for a Gallery
Using WP for galleries isn’t much different from using it for portfolios. But there are some differences, including the need to allow commenting and rating for individual gallery items, display of top rated items, and dynamic sorting. Some WordPress powered galleries include webdesignbook.net and Lovely Blogs. - Using WP for a Photoblog
Again, the concept of using WordPress for photoblogs is similar to using WP for galleries or portfolios. But there are unique customisations that will have to be applied for photoblogs, including automatic resizing of uploaded images and easy publishing of a photo’s exif data. Two examples of WP-powered photologs include Pictorialis and dilineate. - Using WP for a News or Magazine Site
News and magazine sites usually need to have feature articles kept on the front page, free of WP’s default reverse chronological display format. They might also need category pages (e.g. for sports news, international news, etc.) with the same implementation (i.e. feature articles specific to the category). Examples include XXL Magazine and Cebu Living. - Using WP for Article Libraries
Article libraries generally need to manage and display articles in a hierarchical manner, yet must also be able to display those articles in reverse chronological order without hierarchy (i.e. Recent Articles). Generally, WordPress’ pages system is hacked to achieve this as unlike Posts, Pages are listed hierarchically. One example of this is A-Level.EconoRef - a site I manage that is still in development.
This list surely isn’t definitive, but I think it’s does its job in showing what it means to use WP in a more CMS-manner and less as a blogging platform.
And for those who want more details on how to replicate some of the examples above, don’t worry, as this is barely an outline of the Using WordPress as CMS series. Catch the technical details as the series goes on.

Lorelle: Thanks. Hopefully, I’ll be able to meet your expectations on this.
Hmm, I don’t think calling them “blog models” is appropriate since the end products may not even have a blog at all, e.g. a gallery site, but I agree that there must be something to call them.
Hamza: Good ideas. I didn’t think of feed aggregators and wikis.

Using it as a portfolio… great piece of software
August 27th, 2006 at 4:39 pm
Good start to some of the common functions defining a ‘web site’ cms, but the big thing I find lacking from open-source solutions for industry/business/enterprise needs (particularly in govenment/education) is a combination of workflow processing and central/common user authentication. There is little or no support for ldap/ads or other user access services and having docs produced buy one author and then ammended by the media deprtment, enhanced by the graphics dept and then authorised by the marketing dept is a must in enterprise, yet lacking in wp and most cms solutions.

[…] You’re Pushing ItWordPress was built to be a blog platform first, everything else second. So, everytime you push it to do something else, remember that you’re making it do something it wasn’t meant to do. You might very well go too far (think 20+ database queries on top of those WP normally calls, and I’m sure some of you rack in even higher numbers), and take a big performance hit. Or you just might break it trying to build a pseudo-Drupal out of WP by modifying core code… Ludicrous, but entirely possible. […]

Martin: Thanks, there’s a lot to come.
Mark: Interesting one. Considering that Hamza has added a couple more, I really should write a follow-up. Now, all I need is to find time…
Rex: I didn’t think about workflow management, but it’s definitely something to consider when using WP as a CMS.
August 27th, 2006 at 6:28 pm
Ivan: Agreed, and IMHO, WP seems particularly suitable for simple portfolios too. If you have the time, it would be great if you could counter-check my post on using WP for a portfolio site with your approach to see if there’s anything to add.

I use Wordpress, and I find that if you look for the right plugins you can do a lot more than just blog with it. I’ve used a few other CMS type deals before, but WP has really won me over.

Brajeshwar: Nice minimalistic theme. A photoblog implementation of WP is definitely something I’ll explore later in the series.
Chris: Yes.
devGimp: I’ll give my best if that’s what you want.
Really.
Adrock: Hmm, then I feel your definition of CMS is a little too broad. By general definition, WordPress is a CMS since it manages content, even if only in a limited scope. I agree though that anyone looking for something super-robust should seek the correct tools, including the enterprise solutions you suggested.
macewan: Keep up the good work!
chaaban: Oops, you’re right, but then, I’ve already missed out tons of CMS uses for WP (see the top most comments).
Jason: A few days ago, I’d have agreed wholeheartedly, but after considering what Matt said on a recent post of mine, I feel there’s really little that can’t be done using plugins and themes alone.
Karthik and Gavin: Agreed, but I advise some consideration nevertheless.

Hi there, nice article (I read it in Italian). We at our office use Wordpress for our Intranet site. It’s really good for this purpose: you can have a “blog” area where people can discuss about projects and services, a document repository (for filing requests to various offices), a weekly newspaper (both online and PDF), and internal phonebook (both online and PDF). This last feature is a plugin I’m developing: it gets data from our LDAP server and publishes them as a Wordpress page. You can search the directory and look for people in a given department. Last but not least, another plugin I did, gets data from our employes database: Badge Based Time Clocks and so on.
