Using WordPress as CMS
WordPress (WP) has always been a highly versatile blogging platform, even way back in v1.2. So versatile that many have attempted to push it to the next level, and use it as a more conventional content management system (CMS) – not unlike Drupal, XOOPS, Joomla, and gang.
And if the coverage a recent post on using WordPress to run a magazine or news website got is indicative of the interest people have in pushing the limits of WP, then there’s still a whole bucket load of it now.
So, here’s little me starting a series of posts on Using WordPress as a CMS – from the more theoretical to the more practical (sub)topics. Hopefully, the things I’ve learnt while playing with WP so far will come in useful to some of you.
Below is a list of the posts written in this series so far:
- Fundamental Theory
- Fundamental Technical Stuff
- All-in-One Guides

I’m sure this will come in handy for those using WP’s pages system extensively (i.e. those using WP more as a CMS), and is a great fit for the CMS-friendly concept or rather, permalink structure, I outlined yesterday. Thanks for posting these! Very helpful. I’ve made two wp-based sites. One is ecommerce using PayPal and the other is a wp blog disguised as a regular site. The blog function is presented as “news.” Faced with a decision about what platform to use for my own online business (in the works), I looked at Joomla and osCommerce, etc. After learning more about making wp into an ecommerce site in a different way than I have already, I realized I have everything I need in wp (with the help of plugins). Your blog has been a great discovery and I’ve added your feed to my reader. Looking forward to more.

[...] This looks pretty cool and promising: a series of posts/articles/ideas on how to use WordPress as a CMS, which is something I am particularly interested in doing as I figure out more ways to use WordPress in my teaching and with “publishing,” especially things like my soon to be available research writing textbook project. One could make the argument that if you want to use a CMS, you should use a CMS– like drupal or something. But the thing is I like and vaguely understand WordPress, and hey, why change now? [...]

Michael: Indeed, WP has all it needs to run a simple e-commerce shop. Oh yes, interesting shirts.
Seymein: Sorry, but I don’t really understand what you’re asking for. When you say “complete archive posts”, do you mean a list of all your posts at once, with titles only (like Movable Type’s archive page)? If so, check wp-plugins.net for an archive plugin (there are a few). If you need more help, give me a shout.

[...] One of the most popular questions I’m e-mailed with is usually along the lines of: How do I integrate a forum with my WordPress (WP) blog?. Often, this is with reference to using WP as a more web site-ish CMS, e.g. a community site. So, I thought I’d kill three birds with this post. One: Write a (hopefully) brief guide answering the abovementioned question. Two: Before writing a how-to on using WP for a community site, prepare for it by tackling the forum integration issue first. Three: Participate in ProBlogger’s latest group writing project (which will be my first ever participation BTW). [...]

Yay, nice series, I’ve also been looking for this for a while. For the php coders out there who want to do CMS stuff with WP but at a level closer to the actual machinery, you can get access to most of WP’s functionality by writing:
I got that info from the wp-hackers mailing list. More at

doh, code didn’t display…
in php write:
define(‘WP_USE_THEMES’, false);
require(‘wp-blog-header.php’);
and you get access to all of WP, such as:
while (have_posts()) : the_post();
the_ID();
the_content();
endwhile;

I was first reluctant to go with widgets but after enabling them for my CMS theme I find them useful. Static sites can be made looking more ‘dynamic’ with some of the great widgets that are out there. Still, in order to make the theme also work for non-widget versions of WP I added an easy to customize section to sidebar.php. Unfortunately this means, that one needs to edit the sidebar.php file if one wants to remove/customize them. Those not afraid to do so, might want to have a look.
