The Style Contest – Movable Type Theme Competition

Over the past few months, we’ve heard of two WordPress theme competitons, one legitimate (at least for now) and another deemed a fraud.

Now, Movable Type comes into the spotlight with an official theme competition – i.e. sponsored by Six Apart (MT’s creators) – aptly named as The Style Contest, which boasts a US$17,000 prize pool. So far, I can only see three submitted entries (excluding the sample entry by the organizers), but there’s little doubt that we’ll see many more by the May 15th deadline.

There are a few theme requirements though. One: Include a base-weblog.css. Two: Use relative URLs. And three: Make sure your theme is StyleCatcher compatible. None are difficult for experienced Movable Type theme designers.

In fact, I strongly suggest first-timers to join as well. While MT has a weak reputation among the open source community, and therefore, a large percentage of theme designers, this could actually end up as an advantage for less experienced theme designers to show their stuff. But no rush really. After all, you still have about one and a half months from now. Yeah, that’s a pretty long time.
