Shameless Promotion 101

Being capable of shamelessly promoting something you have an interest in is important. These days, it’s not only the salespeople and CEOs that have to realise this, but also the average blogger - whether to promote an affiliate, increase exposure and thus, traffic to your own blog, or just increase your blog’s page views. In fact, shameless promotion is perhaps of greatest importance to a blogging upstart - one whose online existence has yet to be recognised by anyone but Mr. Dad, Mrs. Mom and Ms. Sister.

And before you think, “Nah, no reason to do sell my soul,” consider these “everyday” scenarios: Anil Dash (Movable Type blogger) advertising the fact that 60% of the fifty most popular science blogs use MT, Paul Scrivens (CEO of 9rules) pointing out an error on TechCrunch and simultaneously promoting a similar blog, Solution Watch (which is part of 9rules, of course), and Darren Rowse featuring a post published over at Peformancing while plugging one of his older posts on the same subject.

The first example shows how you can shamelessly promote your own product through your blog. The second is an example of how you can promote a member of your blog network, while the third example gives you an idea of how you can promote one of your older posts to lead eyeballs back to them (possibly increasing page views).

Clearly, there are many motives to make what Jim Boykin calls “CEO Posts” (though what I’m talking about is broader than this).

But what about the different ways you can do this? Surely posting on your own blog isn’t the only way you can promote something. In most cases, you won’t be able to promote your own blog that way.
