Movable Type 3.3’s New Features

Although Six Apart announced that Movable Type 3.3 would be ready for beta testing as early as next week yesterday, they did not touch on MT 3.3’s new features.

So, it isn’t surprising that Six Apart finally found time to do just that today. Among the announced new features are a built-in tagging system, search and activity feeds, “transformer” plugins, better activity logs, “smarter” defaults, as well as improved templating and plugin development.

Of the new features, I’m most interested in the inclusion of search and activity feeds because this is possibly one of the few features that Wordpress does not come with (built-in or with plugins). Activity feeds will relay not only new posts, but also new comments, trackbacks, software errors and warnings. Moreover, activity feeds will come with links to access actions that you would normally have to visit your dashboard for. And did I say that these activity feeds can be customised with your own custom info or actions?

But as for new features, activity feeds are as far as “unique” goes. Tagging can already be accomplished through Wordpress’ Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin - which IMHO, will most likely remain more robust compared to MT’s tagging system (except for the built-in tag cloud generation MT will offer, but WP has multiple plugins for that).

Even the announced “transformer” plugins already exist for Wordpress in the form of the Tiger Admin plugin and the upcoming Shuttle plugin.

So, what does MT 3.3 bring to the table that is really going to change the current blog software environment?
