Adult Pro-Blogs?
This topic is so out of place that I had to create a misc. subcategory of blogging just for it. When we think of Adult Blogs, we generally point our minds at splogs (i.e. spam blogs), and indeed, most adult blogs out there are splogs, as shown by Kailash Nadr’s banning of almost all adult blogs from using Pingoat.
But for someone interested in such a niche, is it worth your while to build a quality (non-splog) adult blog?
Let us first talk about the monetary side of this discussion. Well, the most important fact is that Adsense doesn’t allow adult blogs and therefore, one of the most important source of revenues, especially for smaller blogs, is gone. Most other reliable advertisers (i.e. Chitika, Fastclick, etc.) are similarly out of the question.
Of course, there are adult sponsors everywhere. Google for a list of adult sponsors and you will find innumerable hits (e.g. adultsponsors.com). I’ve been told that quite a number of these sponsors can be reliable at the above average level. Look up adult webmaster forums like Netpond for more information on this since I won’t be interested in such a niche any time soon. So, there’s definitely something to be made from adult blogs (or why would there be so many splogs in the first place?). Granted, many adult splogs dump tons of adverts that are not meant for adult blogs in the first place in hope to make a buck without Google (for example) from noticing. But let us forget splogs for a moment.
What about content? The typical splog has a picture plus a few lines of explicit text as a standard post. In my opinion (only), quality adult blogs would thus need to be entirely different, not because 1 picture + 2 lines of text is pathetic, but because it would just tie your quality adult blog too closely to adult splogs.
Again, let me repeat that I’m no authority on this (I’m writing this post based on my own thoughts about this), so whatever I write from this line on is my personal opinion only. So, correct me if I’m wrong.
I am sure that there are many sub-niches that an adult blog can be placed in. Nevertheless, common among quality adult blogs would be original content (and not rehashed adult pictures or textual content from free sites). To me, original content implies original pictures and videos (which will definitely not be exclusive for long), but since this is unlikely given the unlikelihood of a subscription system for adult blogs (like adult sites), I’m looking at quality consolidation, commentary, comparison, or reviews of free content out there. Even interesting news and opinion on adult or somewhat adult-related topics would work. I suppose Sexerati – part of the Fine Fools blog network – would qualify this way. I’m also considering original textual content, e.g. jokes, stories, and the like.
Traffic will not be a problem in a niche like this. We all know that.
Hosting does not seem to be a problem either. Free adult blog hosts, like Thumblogger are available after all. A horizontal bar on top of the page (just like Blogger) is the only price for hosting there. In fact, it is not as if you couldn’t host an adult blog on Blogspot (or some other free blog host) either. There are free blog hosts that condone adult blogs in their Terms of Service too. I can’t remember offhand but a check of blog hosts’ TOS would not be difficult.
So, you could make something big out of quality adult blogs. Check about.com’s listing of several notable adult blogs. But, of course, these are primarily adult blogs with first-hand gossip, which not everybody will have.

Nice post, as an industry insider I must say that most of your thoughts are absolutely true.
The real problem with splogs is that it’s pretty easy to make a quick buck in adult, much easier than in mainstream, because most affiliate programs offer tools even very unexperienced webmasters can get a site up and running with in a few minutes.
RSS feeds with premade posts that contain the affiliate ID, premade video and picture galleries, premade content plugins, free content in abundance.
Signup for a few sponsor programs, find free adult blog host, import sponsor RSS feeds and you got a blog with hundreds of posts, images linking to galleries, the complete splog package.
Entering the industry needs zero upfront investment, it attracts many part-timers who want to make some extra cash without much work.
As long as google still ranks splogs well, the problem won’t disappear, but long term success and really $$$$$ can only be achieved with quality content, you are totally right about that…especially since 99,9% of all adult affiliate programs have pay per sale or revenue share models, so a click isn’t worth anything if you can’t presell the visitor.
